Handling diversity

Student’s heritage is increasingly diverse. It is not only about visible or evident ethnic or cultural differences. The habits have changed. Other people were always different, but now they are even more ‘differenter’. The key word heterogeneity forms the discussion in school – mostly in combination with the word ‘problem’. And indeed, school is challenged to deal with this diversity in a smart way. For example: it is not only about accepting that students have different premises, ideas and goals; it is also about using these differences as a chance and resource.

If we take our knowledge about different learning premises a bit serious it should have substantial consequences. Common sense is all it takes to see that the rigid formation in traditional structures is not acceptable anymore to deal with the increasing diversity in a constructive and sensible manner.

Heterogeneity doesn’t have to be linked to the word “problem”. On the contrary. Differences can be exploited as potential and a resource. Diversity Management is the appropriate term in the professional world.
